If we were all blind

December 2, 2014 at 12:19 pm (Uncategorized)

If the entire humanity were blind, would we somehow realise the existence of light? Or differentiate between colours?

We all know that colours are beautiful. That our world will be incomplete without light and boring and dull without colors. But for someone who has never seen the light of day, how do you explain what it is? How do you say what red or green looks like? Except to teach them physics and everything about wavelengths. Which is so difficult for some that they’ll just ignore it. Somehow this went from wonder to science, but aren’t they related…

Coming back, now imagine that there is one person who is not blind. She can see, not well, not far away, and not colours, but just a vague sense of light. What will the others think of her? And will anybody listen?

What if this is true? What if instead of light, we are missing something even more beautiful? And calling those who do see it, mad?

When Jem left!

June 3, 2014 at 11:10 am (Uncategorized)

Spoilers for The Mortal Instrument

When Jem left, Will suffered and Tessa suffered. And they were the only ones who understood this suffering. Because Jem was to them what they were to each other. Others saw them and felt sad, and pity and sympathy, but no one understood, not really. It was Will who lost half of himself and it was Tessa who lost her love and who had seen Will and Jem for what they truly were to each other. After Jem left, whenever Will was sad, Tessa understood because she was sad too.

And when Will left, Tessa was alone, but Jem came back. Because even though he was a silent brother, he never truly left. That was how much the three meant to each other. Even being a silent brother couldn’t keep him apart. And when he came back, Tessa would remember Will with him just as she remembered Jem with Will.

But when Jem left too, that was when she was truly alone. People saw her and said they understood, but it was Tessa only who remained of the people who had seen them and you had to have seen them to truly know what they were. So, after Jem left for the second time, that’s when the world was left with no charm.

There were never 2 brothers like Jem and Will and never will there ever be again!

Free online courses

April 29, 2014 at 12:47 pm (Uncategorized)

This is probably an article that I’ll come back to…some time in future…probably far away future…maybe never… But it doesn;t hurt to collect resources.

Also the article is a copy-paste. Just put here to spread this wonderful article!

“In recent years massive open online courses (MOOCs) have become a trend in online education. The term was coined in 2008 by David Cormier, manager of web communications and innovations at the University of Prince Edward Island. The first MOOC was created the previous year, at Utah State University.

MOOCs are designed like college courses but are available to anyone anywhere in the world, at no cost. You do not receive a college credit, but you will receive a certificate of completion when you complete all coursework. The courses span dozens of subjects and are taught by some of the leaders in those fields. The courses are designed to be interesting, fun and rigorous; the courses are not just in science, and not just in English.

Coursera is perhaps the most well-known of the online education facilitators. Their latest numbers indicate that they have 17,000,000 enrollments from students representing 190 countries. There are 240,000
students in their most popular class. Coursera has over 400 courses in more than 20 categories, created by 85 Universities from 16 countries. Their courses are available in 12 different languages.

EdX is another non-profit course site created by founding partners Harvard and MIT and based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. EdX offers MOOCs and interactive online classes in subjects including law, history, science, engineering, business, social sciences, computer science, public health, and artificial intelligence (AI). It has partnerships with tertiary institutions in the U.S., Canada, Australia, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Japan, China and Korea.

MIT has their own open courseware, where most of the materials used in the teaching of almost all of MIT’s subjects are available on the Web, free of charge. They have more than 2,000 courses available. Stanford also has their own online and open courses. These are great options if you prefer to work at your own pace, as compared to structured classes like those offered at Coursera and EdX.

European institutions are also getting in on the act. Germany-based Iversity offers courses in both English and German and the first courses went online in October this year. Future Learn is a subsidiary of the British Open University and is currently in its beta stage. It already has partnerships with universities across Britain, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. The courses will begin this coming November.

For those looking to learn a language Duolingo offers completely free language education. If you’re interested in learning a valuable skill CodeAcademy teaches programming and coding in online, free and interactive lessons.

Other sites, like Open Culture, are not affiliated with tertiary institutions. On Open Culture, the editor finds the free courses and audio books on the web and hosts them on the site. The courses are audio & video and can be downloaded straight to a computer or mp3 player.

This is by no means a complete list of all site and institutions that offer free online courses. http://www.mooc-list.com/ has many more listed.

Are AAP candidates really what we need in this elections?

April 25, 2014 at 8:50 am (Uncategorized)

Recently I came across this question on quora – How competent are the AAP candidates being fielded for this lok sabha elections?  It got me thinking about what I can really expect from these candidates.

Most of the candidates of aam aadmi party are just that, aam aadmi, common man. There are lawyers, doctors, social activists, teachers. Common people who made a name in their field, but they are common people. What i mean to say is that they are not politicians.

Now, i know we hear politician and we think of a corrupt, proud, selfish person. But that is not all, is it? A politician is also a planner, a negotiator, a leader. They have to be the ones who know how to get what they want, no matter the means. They know the importance of bribe, the weaknesses of their colleagues, the usefulness of cameras, the advantage of innocence. Politics is dirty. But it’s not because of corruption, it’s because there is no place for idealism in politics. It’s a chess with more than a hundred players. It’s not for the weak, or the good, or even the intelligent; it’s for the experienced, for the devious, for the cunning.

I am not favoring corruption. I thought AAP would be good in Delhi. They betrayed me, that’s another thing. i still think AAP might do good in Delhi if they come again. But Centre is another thing. It’s not a state they’ll be representing but the country. Our country. They’ll be dealing with a hell of a lot of issues, from international politics to environment, from falling rupee to internal security, from safety of women to health issues, and corruption.

Are we really ready to hand over our country to people with no experience in times like now?

Tears: weapon or weakness

February 28, 2014 at 3:28 pm (Uncategorized)

This is going to be a sad post. You have been warned.

Sometimes, l wonders how far I have came. From being the kid who used to cry just because it was a very strong bargaining chip, almost guaranteed to get her what she wants; to being the girl who hides in the bathroom and cries, because she knows that if her parents hear it, it will only end worse for her; to the girl who cries because she knows that they purge her of her anger and hurt leaving a hollowness, a hole, behind, which she tries to fill with calm, if not happiness, and hopes that one day she will succeed.

I read somewhere a question, when do you know that you are a grown up. There were many answers, but i wonder nobody mentioned tears. I think you are a grown up when you realise that its only yourself that you can change, when you can pull a perfectly natural fake smile, when you wait for the day to end just so you can curl up in your bed and cry into your pillow, when you realise that tears are a weakness and not a strength.
